The sloppy handling of people arriving in Italy, repeated changes in the law and a lack of information result in terrible odysseys for migrants who are left alone and completely lost in a foreign and unknown country.<\/p>\n
Angel<\/strong> arrived in Italy in 2019 after being rescued by the German-flagged ship Ocean Viking<\/em><\/strong>. At that time, ports were timidly being reopened after the then Minister of the Interior vetoes. Still, the final goal of Italian politics was to impose a redistribution of asylum seekers to the nations to which rescue vessels belonged. That is why, seven months after his arrival, Angel was sent to Germany<\/strong>. Here, nobody informed him that he was entitled to asylum<\/strong> for fleeing his country for being a homosexual, thus he told a different story and the commission denied his asylum request.<\/p>\n Luckily, he decided to come back to Italy and in Bologna he met Omar<\/strong>, a guy who regularly came to the Nido del Colibr\u00ec<\/a>. Then Imoz<\/strong>, another guy we were working with, helped with finding him a place to stay, while we were trying to figure out if he could reapply for asylum in Italy, since it was the first European country where he had applied for asylum.<\/p>\n And here comes the surprise: the Questura (the Italian Police Department) stated that his transfer to Germany, three years later, had not been finalised! We are now trying to figure out how to help him out of this bureaucratic mess. Meanwhile, we are registering him with the NHS<\/em> and, thanks to our volunteers, he is completing his vaccination cycle and acquiring several useful documents for his stay.
