Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, the 27 years old daughter of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto who was killed by the Taliban in 2007, is accused of blasphemy. In Pakistan is not difficult to be charged with blasphemy. In this case, it was a simply tweet about Ramadan.
On May 11, BB called the Ehteram-e-Ramazan Bill (reverence of fasting) a ridiculous law. The ordinance may enforce imprisonment and fines if caught smoking, eating or drinking in public place, during Ramadan. he Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs unanimously approved a penalty increment for hotel owners, movie theaters and TV channels violating the amendment. [The Express Tribune]
BB first tweeted: “People are going to die from heat stroke and dehydration with this ridiculous law. Not everyone is able. This is not Islam.” [Twitter]
After been attacked by many Pakistani and been criticized by many fundamentalist on social networks, BB felt the need to explain herself further, so to avoid additional complication: “Elaboration on my tweet re arresting people 4 drinking water during Ramadan. We are more than capable 2 resist temptation & keep our fasts” [Twitter], “but not every1 in will be fasting -children in school/elderly/people with medical problems. Should we arrest them four drinking water”. [Twitter]. “Fasting is 1 of the 5 pillars of Islam. It is an imp obligation. But where is law re punish every1 around u with arrests?! Not in Islam.” [Twitter]
